For the March 11 Vespers, we’re presenting a terrific group of Japanese and Japanese-American musicians:
AKIRA TANA’S OTONOWA/TOHOKU PROJECT
MARCH 11, 4:00pm
It's interesting (and important) to note that March 11 is the 7th anniversary of the Japanese earthquake we all heard about.
Inspired by the courage of the communities rebuilding after The Great Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011, Akira Tana and Otonowa interpret the songs of their shared ancestry with a Western jazz sensibility.
Otonowa is on an extended mission to raise awareness and to bring relief to those communities still rebuilding and recovering from a natural disaster that claimed over 20,000 lives. Otonowa completed it’s fifth consecutive tour of Northern Japan in 2017 and is planning to return in the fall of 2018. All of the tours have been charity endeavors and all costs for the tours have been raised through fundraising efforts.
Profits from the recording sales are directed to the rebuilding efforts Support can be made by visiting www.otonowa-usa.com
Otonowa is led by Akira Tana. Other members are Masaru Koga on reeds, perc. Art Hirahara on piano, and Ken Noriyuki Okada. The group has 2 recordings," Otonowa” and “Stars Across the Ocean.”
